The ‘Paintograph’ is shot in Crawford Market, Mumbai, the city of
dreams and entrepreneurs. ‘Jugad’/ ‘Solutions’, a series of
‘Paintographs’ is the coming together of Tarpaulin sheets
(commonly called ‘chhapras’) constructed as roofs by sellers in
the market as means of protection from the most basic difficulty
of selling outdoors, the weather! (Rains and extreme heat in a city
like Mumbai), it is their solution to unfavourable weather.
And for the way Priyal imagines it, looking at these made up
Tarpaulin roofs, it takes her back to her childhood, when she
while playing ‘house’, her first encounter with loosely created
spaces, she created never ending spaces, using bed-sheets,
stools, tables, chairs and pillows. Therefore, dedicated to those
memories, she has created a fantasy world of her imagined
spaces within the images shot by her.
This photo collage series was exhibited at The Metropolitan
Pavilion, MET, New York.
