The artist Shilpa says that her work draws deeply from the complex realities of migration, assimilation, rehabilitation, and the environmental and social challenges of our time. For over 25 years, she has seen art not just as a form of expression, but as a reflection of human resilience—a bridge between memory and the present, especially in the context of migration and the future of humanity.
Her family's migration to Mumbai plays a central role in her artistic journey. Stories of her ancestors, who were traders of various commodities in pre-independent India, shaped her understanding of migration as more than physical movement—it is a form of cultural and economic survival. This understanding informs her artistic practice, whether in printmaking or painting.
The coastal landscapes of Jafrabad, her ancestral home, are a recurring theme in her work. She draws inspiration from drying fish, shifting tides, and burdened shorelines, using abstract styles to portray the struggles and resilience of displaced lives. For Shilpa, both art and migration are transformative journeys—crossing borders, reshaping landscapes, and uncovering the shared threads of the human experience.
