Lalit R. Patil (b. 1972) trained at Sir J. J. School of Art, Mumbai, graduating with a BFA in 1994. Early in his career he was awarded the K. K. Hebbar Foundation Scholarship and the Camlin First Prize for the final-year show at Sir J. J., and later won the Bombay Art Society Prize (2000). He also completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Indian Aesthetics at Jnanapravaha, Mumbai (2009).
Patil works primarily in painting and mixed media (acrylic, ink, collage and layered paper techniques). His visual language often fuses figurative elements with textured, documentary-like collage, and he experiments with layering, print-like marks and tactile surfaces to evoke memory, place and social narrative. Several works reference classical motifs reworked alongside urban documentary fragments — an approach that lets him link historical/visual memory with contemporary city life.
A recurring subject in Patil’s recent practice is the city — especially Mumbai’s informal settlements and their inhabitants. His 2022 solo exhibition Landscape of Identities at Jehangir Art Gallery explored slum-scapes and urban identity, transforming everyday city fragments into lyrical, dignified compositions; the show was covered in Mumbai press and was inaugurated by notable cultural figures.
Exhibition history: he has mounted multiple solo shows (notably at Jehangir in 2005, 2013 and 2022) and a solo presentation at the Fine Arts Faculty, Baroda (2008); he has also shown in group exhibitions and participated in art camps across India. His work is represented on platforms such as Saatchi Art and he maintains an active social presence (Instagram) where he posts studio updates and exhibition news.
